James C. Brannan - Alvarado, TX ?mayor ?obit ?will

In an article dated 21 Dec 1889 about a meeting of the "Alvarado Camp of Ex-Confederate Veterans," my great-grandfather, James Clarence Brannan, was referred to as "The Hon. J. C. Brannon" and someone has said he was major of Alvarado for a time. Can anyone verify this or suggest a resource?

Also have not been able to find an obit or a will. He died in Alvarado on 26 Feb 1899 leaving wife Virginia Lee (Maxey) Brannan and nine children. The widow and family were still in Alvarado for the 1900 Census.

Many thanks!
Mary Henderson Askew
