Bishop and Polk Families
Posted by: Shirley Houston (ID *****0868) Date: May 28, 2002 at 21:24:20

I have been researching the Bishop family. Allen Bishop married Dorcas Polk. They came to Jasper from Georgia. Some of the Bishops stayed in Jasper and some moved to West Texas because of asthma problems.

It has recently been discovered that Dorcas Polk's name was originally spelled Paulk. She descended from one of the first Baptist ministers in Connecticut. Descendants are
probably eligible for the SAR.

Have also discovered that five of their sons served in the Civil War. One daughter married a Wigley. There were four Wigley brothers that served in the Civil War and two were killed and buried at Camp Butler, Illinois.
