The Lovelady Centennial (1872 - 1972) states that "Cyrus Lovelady had a store in the vicinity of Lovelady prior to 1867." The book also mentions a 'Spartan Carter' who may have had the first store. Once the railroad came in in 1872, J. R. B. Barbee opened a store. In the 1890s James P. Gantts had a general merchandise store. During that period there were probably a dozen stores in the town.
