Thanks for your response regarding your great-grandmother Emma Porter Barton Hatton. I do hope there is a family connection.

You wrote that your Emma was born on June 10, 1860. Could the year possibly be 1866 instead of 1860?

James A. Porter's daughter Emma was listed as age 4 on the 1870 census and as age 13 on the 1880 census. Thus, a June 1866 birthdate would match her ages on the census records.

Thanks also for the reference to the 1913 letter by J. C. Barton in which he listed Capt. Jim Porter as a neighbor to the Barton family in the neighborhood west of Brownsboro. My maps show that the next town to the west is Murchison, roughly half way between Brownsboro and Athens. The town of Murchison was named in one of William Walker Porter's notes from the early 1900s, when he was attempting to locate his cousins.
