I am looking for information on a murder that perhaps took place in Hale County, maybe between 1930 and 1940. In the 1930 census, Leslie Pryce Shaw is listed as a school teacher in Abernathy, Hale County (although it appears that ‘Supt’ – Superintendent? – was written and then crossed out). The story passed down in the family is that Leslie had been threatened by a man who thought Leslie was not treating his son right. The man said if Leslie did not treat the kid better, he would come after him with a gun. One day their paths crossed and Leslie thought the man was going for his gun (turns out he wasn't, he was taking his gun to town to have it sighted/repaired). So Leslie shot him and he died. Leslie was a very smart man, the gun was not found, and he was able to eventually get out of prison. [This event may have taken place in Tom Green County and I will post to that forum as well. I may be contacted at]
