Nelia Melanie Fischer Owen

Nelia Melanie Fischer Owen, 98, died Thursday, Dec. 2, at Windham House Nursing Home in Hattiesburg, Miss. Mrs. Owen was the widow of the late Winford Henry Owen, former mayor of Seguin. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, from 7-8 p.m., at Goetz Funeral Home with the funeral service at Goetz Memorial Chapel on Monday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m., and burial will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. The Rev. Malford Hierholzer, the cousin of the deceased, will be conducting the service.

Mrs. Owen was born Dec. 4, 1905, to Julius Frederick Fischer and Emma Augusta Hierholzer Fischer. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Angelia Cecilia Fischer and brother Hilmar Fischer.

A native of Seguin, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Seguin and served as president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Mrs. Owen was a lifetime member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International honorary women teachers’ organization and was a charter member and the first chapter president of the local chapter.

A lifetime member of the Delphian Study Club, she was also active in many other activities in Seguin including the order of the Eastern Star as well as several bridge clubs.

Mrs. Owen is survived by a daughter, Angela Owen Bedenbaugh and her husband John H. Bedenbaugh of Hattiesburg, Miss. as well as a granddaughter Melanie Bedenbaugh Cooper and her husband James B. Cooper of Sumrall, Miss.

Pallbearers are James Cooper, Mark Harkins, Herbert Saegert, Kenneth Pape, Dick Kappel and Jim Fischer. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church in Seguin.
