By now you may have found what you wanted. I noticed on the 1860 census Mary owns land. Does her name show up on the tax records? If so, that means she is a widow. Now then her husband left minor children and there should be guardianship records for them. Not to physically take them and raise them, but to report back to the court if land is sold etc, to protect the interests of those minor children. In that time period women weren't considered capable of handling financial dealings. Follow that land, what happens to it? Did Mary get married again? There she was a widow with land and some young children to help work that land, too.
