As most of you know, over forty persons were sentenced and hung in Gainesville in October of 1862. Only four of the burial places are known (4 out of 40??). I'm searching for descendants or kin who may know who claimed the body or if it was buried on the family land. Those not claimed were buried in shallow graves near the tree but I don't think any remains are to be found there. John Ware fled back to Missouri. That didn't stop his son from becoming Cooke County Sheriff - Pat Ware. He married Matilda Ellen Anderson. Four Andersons were hung also. Related? Another son married the daughter of George Dister/Dyster/Deister who is mentioned in most accounts as having a secret route to the Ware place. We live near the Dye survey, even bought some of his land. Ramey Dye was hung. He had married the daughter of Arphaxad Dawson. Arphaxad Dawson was hung. James Powers was hung and buried on Ware land (now Nelson). His brother-in-law was Obediah Atkinson who it turns out had sold land to William W. Wernell. Wernell was hung and buried on Clark land. Nathaniel Clark was hung. The only burials out of 40 known are Clark, Wernell, Powers, and Burch. Where are the others?
