Seeking information on the history of the STEVENS in the area of Gonzales, Dewitt,
Lavaca Counties area of Texas. My gg-grandfather
ELISHA STEVENS (abt.1810-?) left Rankin County, Mississippi in 1846 to join the Dewitt Colony.
He supposedly joined the
Merrill Simth wagon train along with members of the WILLIAM STEEN family in
Mississippi and got to Texas around 1846.

ELISHA STEEN supposedly owned land in the
area of Gonzales, Dewitt, and Lavaca counties

Looking at county maps of Gonzales County I have noticed the landmaks of STEVENS CREEK
and STEVENS HILL and have wondered if these were named after the early settlers in the
migration to this area in the 1830's & 40's.
and remotely possible, named after ELISHA or
his relatives.

Are there any cemeteries in this area that seem to have STEVENS or STEEN graves above the norm
or agency in the area I may write for any info on these early families.

Any inforamation, fact or lore, of the early STEVENS' or STEENS' in these three counties
would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry Stevens
