I descend from the Barfield family of Goliad County from which Karnes County was later created. My relative is said to be the first sheriff of Goliad County. Family later lived in Helena in Karnes County.

James Hayes Barfield, sheriff, Yalobusha County, came to Leon County, Republic of Texas in 1841. One of his sons:
Isham Carroll Barfield of Yalobusha County, Mississippi, married (2) Ruthy L. Rogers in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and (3) Sarah E. Lattimer and there were 10 children by the third marriage, sixteen by all 3 marriages.
Susan Alice Barfield married William B. Lewis
(who were my great-great-grandparents)
