According to information taken from a Gillespie family bible which was in the posession of George English of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Gillespie County was named after Samuel Huston Gillespie. He was born Sept. 1, 1845 and died in Bastrop, Texas. He was the son of John Morgan Gillespie and Naomi Thompson Gillespie (first cousins by brothers George Gillespie(m. to Martha Morgan) and Thomas L. Gillespie(m. to Catherine Beard)
Samuel Hoston Gillespie's parents were both born in North Carolina and died in Vienna, Illinois. They are buried in the Johnson County cemetary. His siblings were 1. William Bright-b. Nov. 10, 1833 2. James Hiram-b. March 6, 1835 3. Kezich Catherine-b.Aug. 2, 1836 4. Martha Ann-b. Nov. 17, 1838 5. Mary Amands-b. July 10,,1841 6. Francis Marion-b. May 21, 1843 7.Samuel Huston 8. Sarah Elizabeth-b. Oct. 5, 1847 9. Malinda Jane-b. Aug. 17, 1850 10. George Thomas-b. Oct. 1, 1852 and 11. Louisa Clementine-b. Nov. 29,1854.
