In researching my family tree, I have discovered that one of my in law kin was Fannie Belle Bennett. She was the great granddaughter of Colonel Joseph L Bennett...from Montgomery Co. who led men at the Battle of San Jacinto. (more on him here: http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/BB/fbe50.html) I have learned a great deal about him over the last few months and am planning to write up a bio for my site. It's here: timcdfw.com/genealogy I dont know if you have heard, but his burial site was all but near destroyed in 1971. I discovered this a few months ago from online reports. Apparently, the Bennett Cemetery sits on private land near Streetman in Freestone Co. The new landowner at the time bulldozed the stones. I have not made contact nor been over there to see....but its on my list. More here: http://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Etx/Freestone/cemetery/bennett.htm I don't have experience in tracking down the legalities of desecrating a cemetery, but I think its time that collectively, Texas residents should be made aware that one of its heroes of the Republic may not have a burial or memorial. This is very disturbing. Not only as a kin, but as a proud native Texan. I'd like to begin the process of seeing what can be done to give Col.Bennett the recognition he so deserves. If anyone has more information or the exact location for this cemetery, please contact me. Tim Notify Administrator about this message?
