Patricia,
You may already have this by now but heres a bit anyway.

This piece is speaking of the community of Haw Creek.

In addition, the Haw Creek School was held in the Lutheran Church. White sack cloth curtains were hung from the ceiling to separate the children into different classes. Portions of the walls were painted black to serve as blackboards for the school. According to Walter Stierling, who taught at Haw Creek in 1913, the teacher's salary was forty dollars a month. The teachers taught all of the subjects to grades one through seven. Some of the school teachers were Emily von Rosenberg, Dolly Von Rosenberg Finck, Charles Mathis Finck, and Robert Rachui. Herman Schule, the last teacher at the Haw Creek School before it closed, taught from 1937 until 1942 for a monthly salary of sixty dollars.
