Looking for further information on Jeremiah Proctor, b. abt. 1820 in TN, lived in Alabama, came to Texas at an early age; married Nancy Smith about 1838, lived in Harris Co., TX. Left Harris Co. after 1870 and went to the Hood/Erath County, TX area, where he died in 1890. Buried Old Dublin Memorial Park Cemetery, Erath Co.
I cannot find Jeremiah and Nancy in the 1880 census; son-in-law, Silas Butler, was in Johnson Co.; son John D. Proctor was in Erath Co.
Jeremiah, said to be a son of William Proctor, had brothers Stephen, William, and Joseph. There was also another Jeremiah Proctor in Texas – Stephen’s son, b. 1849. This younger Jeremiah was also married to a woman named Nancy, which adds to the confusion. (In addition, there was an additional Jeremiah Proctor, b. 1839, son of Samuel Forbes Proctor. I do not believe this third Jeremiah ever left Alabama.)
The elder Jeremiah Proctor and wife Nancy Smith had the following children:
Mary Ann Proctor, b. 17 DEC 1840, Harris, Texas; d. Aug. 12, 1890; married Mar. 14, 1858 Silas Magby Butler
Cassandra Proctor, b. 3 APR 1845, Harris, Texas; d. 1892
Ben Franklin Proctor, b. 1847, Harris, Texas
Rebecca Proctor, b. 23 JAN 1850, Harris, Texas; d. 4 May 1908
William A. Proctor, b. MAR 1852, Harris, Texas
John D. Proctor, b. 11 APR 1854, Harris, Texas; d. 14 JAN 1920
Joseph Wilson Proctor, b. 1856, Harris, Texas
Nancy A. Proctor, b. 1864, Harris, Texas
They also cared for, at various times, the children of Nancy’s deceased sister, Charlotte Smith White, and for Jeremiah’s brother Stephen’s youngest sons, James “Jim” Proctor and Jackson Lafayette Proctor.
Nancy Smith Proctor was a granddaughter of Christian Smith, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred.” She died in Harris County in 1904.
I am especially interested in 1) further tracing Jeremiah’s ancestry, and 2) finding out more about the family’s stay in the Hood/Erath/Johnson County area. I appreciate any help or suggestions anyone might have.
