Hello William, I sent you the 1920 census,from ancestry.com, looks like he was in the Armed Services? No wife listed, but she is on his WW1 registration papers as Mrs.Gloria Maud Gillon.
He may have been on a Photgraphy launch at that time?
I searched on ancestry.com and Familysearch.org, found no 1930 census. He may have just missed this census for traveling someplace. I imagine you have found his passport and picture on it.
