Hi Emil,
The 1840 Census only shows the name of the head of household and there's no way to know if that's your James Prater or not.

I did find a James Prater who married Mary J. Gilbreath on 21 April 1846 in Knox Co., TN. Source: Tennessee State Marriages 1780-2002, Ancestry.

Maybe your records can confirm this is your James and Mary. If yes, find their marriage info in TN and maybe his parents will be listed. Successful Searching!
