O.B. Smith and Anna E. Powell b. about 1862 Texas

I have no proof that O.B. Smith and Anna E. Powell Smith lived in Cooper, Delta County, Texas. I am hoping someone will see this and recognize the couple.

I have been told they lived around Cooper for most of their married life. O.B. was probably a farmer. They are said to have had one daughter and the daughter was named Beaulah Stephens, whether the Stephens was her married name, or her birth name, I don't know. One of the descendants of Tom and Eliza told me this.

Anna was the daughter of Thomas David Powell and Eliza j. Stiefer (choose your own way of spelling, it has varied). They were married in Tyler, Smith County, Texas in 1856. "Tom" went to war during the Civil War, leaving Eliza with three children, and I hate to say it, but one slave to help her farm. Tom came home on furlough and on 23 October 1864, William Johnson Powell was born in Garden Valley, Smith County, TX. He was my husbands grandfather.

Back to Anna. Tom was a little hardnosed I think, he forbade Anna to marry O.B. Smith. Going so far as to nail down her trunk, where she kept her things. She ran away with O.B. and married. I gather she had little to do with the family after that. Or at least little is known about her life. When W.J. Powell moved to West Texas in the 1920's, he and one of his sons went to visit Anna and her family, knowing that would probably be the last time he would see her.

Anna was the only female child with eight brothers, two older and six younger than herself.

Most of the information I have posted, came from nieces of Anna, whose mother Eliza J. had told them.

Thank you, Joy
