In Reply to: Eli Merrell, 1840 by Pat Merrell of 1985

I am a little bit familiar with the name Eli Merrell. He may have been the father of Olivia or Olevia J. Merrell who married William Douglas Webb. William was the son of Isaac B. Webb his wife Mary Hughes who were some of the original settlers of the Farmer's Branch (Dallas County) area in the 1840s. Many people of that community and their descendants are buried in Webb Chapel

I am currently researching the descendants of persons buried in Webb Chapel Cemetery in Farmer's Branch for a reunion the cemetery association is planning for June 2002 in celebration of Isaac B. Webb's 200th birthday.

Try to locate the book "Elm Fork Settlements: Farmers Branch and Carrollton". It is in many of the Dallas County libraries. The call number is 917.6428 OGL. It was written and compiled by Georgia Ogle Myers. Also look for "Elm Fork Echoes" which was the Quarterly Publication of Peter's Colony Historical Society. It was published for several years and seems to have stopped shortly after Georgia's death in 1989. Both of these have a lot of interesting information on the residents of that area, their ancestors, and descendants.

Two older books were republished together in 1966. They are "History of Dallas County, Texas from 1837 to 1887" by John Henry Brown and "Dallas County: A Record of its Pioneers and Porgress" by John H. Cochran. Page 85 in the first book lists info on Eli Merrell. Page 28 in the second book refutes and corrects some of that info on Eli Merrell.

You can find information on many of the people of the community in the listings for Webb Chapel, Keenan, and Perry cemeteries in the book "Dallas County Texas: Genealogical Data from Early Cemeteries" published by the Dallas Genealogical Society.

Another possible source is the book "The Peters colony of Texas: A History and Biographical Sketches of the Early Settlers" by Seymour V. Connor published by The Texas State Historical Association in 1959. It has short descriptions of the early settlers and their certificate number for the land they received in Peters Colony. It sometimes gives brief information on their families.

What is your connection with Eli Merrell?
