Have you checked the Standard newspaper in Texas for August 26, 1881? It also has Blanton as a ex-sheriff of Cooke County and the other man, named Todd, as a young 18 year old. It has Blanton playing the desperado, shooting in houses, etc., and young Todd had been a witness in a trial against Blanton. In the Galveston Daily News, there is an article about Ben Blanton, ex-sheriff of Cooke County, and a young man James Todd who was witness against Blanton in a suit for divorce.
