Jarvice/Jarvis is not the maiden name of Mary. On the 1880 census she has a son named John Jarvis, from her previous marriage.

1870 census DeKalb Co, AL:

Jarvis, John, 35, b TN - Invalid
" Mary J., 37, b NC
" John, 1, b AL

Next door is John's family:

Jarvis, William, 65, b GA - land 100/personal 168
" Rebecca, 65, b SC
" Edy M., 36, b TN
" Isabella, 29, b TN
" Rebecca, 26, b TN

1860 census DeKalb Co, AL:

Jarvis, John, 24, b TN - no land/personal 250
" Mary J., 26, b NC

I'm thinking John was an invalid from the Civil War. Look for his marriage to Mary prior to 1860 in DeKalb Co, AL. You'll learn her maiden name. I know there is a book of those marriages, I've done research on the county as I have Rice and Standefer lines in that county and neighboring Cherokee Co, AL.

And, you might see if you can track down anyone working on John Jarvis, son of Mary and John. Maybe someone knows his mother's maiden name??? He's on the 1900 and 1910 census in Wise Co, TX, if you want to work on him.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
