The Angelina County Genealogical Society will meet at 5 PM, Monday, March 17, 2014, at Kurth Memorial Library, 706 South Raguet, Lufkin, Texas.

The program will be presented by Carolyn Reeves Ericson of Nacogdoches. For many years, Mrs. Ericson has been a well-known genealogist, historian, author and publisher and a frequent speaker and book seller at genealogy programs and conferences across Texas. Mrs. Ericson operators Ericson Books, an on line source for genealogy publications especially about East Texas residents, and writes a weekly genealogy column, Kissin Kuzzins, that appears in two East Texas Newspapers.
Her topic is expected to be the “Germanna Colonies of Early Virginia.” The Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies in Virginia, Inc., formed in 1956, is located in Locust Grove, Virginia, a small community near the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park west of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The foundation maintains a visitor’s center, museum, genealogy library, memorial garden and a forest with walking trails. The foundation has published THE GERMANNA RECORD with genealogies of the early settlers and other information about the area and the foundation. The foundation will be hosting on July 17-23, 2014, the 300th anniversary of the arrival of some of the first German pioneers to the area about 1714 and the 57th Annual Reunion sponsored by the foundation. More information can be obtained on the foundation website at http://www.germanna.org.
Mrs. Ericson is also scheduled to present a longer speaking session on early Virginia research including information on the Germanna Colonies and Ancient Planters at the CCGS-ETHA Family History Fair on Saturday, March 29th, at the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Texas. Ericson Books is scheduled to be a vendor at the event.
The search is still on-going to locate and display portraits or photographs of all the past sheriffs of Angelina County, Texas, ACGS member Jim Bell said at the February ACGS meeting. Mr. Bell’s ancestor, G. T. W. Collins, was the first sheriff of Angelina County.
Dues for the 2014 society year can still be paid at this meeting. ACGS dues are now $15.00 for individuals and $20.00 for two people at the same address.
The contact person for obtaining further information about ACGS activities is Cindy McMullen, genealogy department librarian, Ora McMullen Genealogy Room, at Kurth Memorial Library, 706 South Raguet Street, Lufkin. E-mail cmcmullen@cityoflufkin.com or call 1-936-630-0563. The society’s web page can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txacgs.
