I will post new information on my John C. LEWIS family in hopes that someone else is researching this same family and may be able to help me fill in gaps.

My John C. LEWIS was born 24 Dec. 1854 in Cherokee County, TX and died 27 Nov 1922 in that county. He married Lou (Loucanda) TIMMONS on 28 Oct 1874 in same county.

John C. LEWIS parents were W.W. LEWIS b. 30 Oct 1824 in TN (I have no county) and d. 17 Jan 1891 in Cherokee county. He married Mary JOHNSON on 4 Aug 1846 (where?) and they had 7 other children besides John C. LEWIS. They are, in birth order:

Mary E.F. LEWIS, b. 14 Nov 1850 and Married Henry Tucker HALL on 28 Oct 1874. This family was living next door to W.W. LEWIS in Cherokee County, TX on the 1880 census and had 3 children (Mary E HALL; William E. HALL; Silas H. HALL).

William H. LEWIS, b. 21 Feb 1853 and d. 1880. (Do not know the spouse(s) for him).

John C. LEWIS (my ggrandfather) b. 24 Dec 1854 and d. 27 Nov 1922 in Cherokee County, TX. He married Lou TIMMONS on 28 Oct 1874. (She was the daughter of Eli TIMMONS/TIMMINS and Sarah Catherine JENKINS/JINKINS.)

Martha E. LEWIS, b. 1857 (have no date of death or marriage for her).

George W. LEWIS, b. 1858 and married Anna FOX on 24 Mar 1887 (have no date of death or place for either of these). They had two sons (George Washington Alexander LEWIS and David Vaughn LEWIS) who lived with my grandparents when they were in their teens, leading me to believe their parents were dead.

Nancy J. LEWIS, b. 10 Feb 1860 and d. 4 Mar 1926. She married Alexander E. GREGORY on 20 Dec 1879. She went by the name of "Nannie".

Silas E. LEWIS, b. 21 Feb 1862 and d. 3 Oct 1891. He married Sallie J. MEADOR. Silas is buried in the Meador cemetery in Jacksonville, Cherokee County, TX next to his father, W.W. LEWIS. (I have found no grave for Mary JOHNSON LEWIS).

Elvira Adaline LEWIS, b. 10 Jan 1865 and d. 14 March 1924. She married William Wallace WHITE and is supposed to be buried in Walker County, TX, but I have not yet confirmed this.

All of the above children were born in Cherokee County, TX.

Children of John C. LEWIS and Lucanda TIMMONS are, in birth order:

John Lee LEWIS b. 1882, d. ?

Catherine LEWIS, b. 11 Feb 1886 and d. 22 Dec 1945. Married to 1) DOORE, and 2) W.H. GARDNER.

Mary Ella LEWIS, b. Aug 1889, d. 1971. Married Mart V. EVANS on 28 Nov 1908.

Jesse Swan LEWIS (my maternal grandfather), b. Nov 1891, d. July 6, 1948. Married to Hattie Bell BAGGETT on 1 June 1916 in Cherokee county, TX. (She was the daughter of Irvin T.E. BAGGETT and Ida Francis BAILEY).

Martin A. LEWIS, b. Nov 1893, d.1962. Married to Robbie JOHNSON, date ?

Susie May LEWIS, b. Dec 1898, d. 1918. Married to W.J. BUFORD (BUFFORD). She died in childbirth and child (daughter, Susie Faye) was raised by Aunt Mary Ella LEWIS.

All of the above children were born in Cherokee County, TX.

If anyone has any additional information on this family, I would be ever so grateful to receive it. I am interested in filling in the missing gaps, and am particularly interested in where in Tennessee W.W. LEWIS and Mary JOHNSON may have originated. I have found no marriage record for W.W. and Mary and wonder if maybe the JOHNSON name may have been a previous married name for Mary?

In 1851 W. W. LEWIS was first a deacon then a preacher at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Cherokee County, TX. The minutes of the church book state that he was a brother-in-law to Silas M. CRUME (who married Nancy WILLIAMS). I have been unable to make any other connection to the CRUME or WILLIAMS family.

I would love to hear from anyone researching any of these families. Thanks very much.
