I am very interested in life in old Brownsville/Matamoros and the Valley. Some years ago I discovered my a 1/2 gguncle had gone there with his family pre 1850. In 1850 he has one son, Johnson Cross, living with him. In the 1850 Slave schedule his 'wife' Lydia is listed as his slave with three more of their children. Descendants of this union still live in both the U S and Mexico. I would like to learn more about what life was like in the early days of the area. I have a copy of "the Twin Cities of the Border" which has ads and articles on the family and its businesses there. I also have the info from John Henry Brown's book "Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas". Can you recommend other sources?
