Oh, I hate to tell you this, but the only 1850 census index I know about, is an index by head of household only -- unless someone is living in a household with a different surname. You will have to look at every Moore household, for a possible J.W. living with them. That's why you need to find his father's name. The Masonic record is a very good idea. I've been told there is personal information on the applications. The further back in time, the less they asked for, but we will keep our fingers crossed that he at least had to put down his father's name. Makes it kind of hard to type, but I think you need the help.
