In Reply to: Hicks, Wilkins, and Wells Families of Texas by Loreta Wells of 280

You can view digitized copies of original death certificates for Henry and son William --;p=2;c=1320964;t=searchable

Henry Hugh Hicks, b 29 Nov 1836, TN; d 14 Nov 1919 Lampasas, TX; mother Wells, b NC; father blank, b NC; informant A.M. Hicks.

William Thomas Hicks, b 29 Nov 1857, TX; d 7 Dec 1939, Lampasas, TX; father Henry Hicks; mother Wells.

I wonder that mother's maiden of Wells is shown on both certificates???? Take a look there is more information on the certificates, informants, buriel etc.

Now, some of the children you listed are in this 1880 family, but head of household is listed as "John H."

1880 census Burnet Co, TX:

Category: Name; Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace.

John H. HICKS Self M Male W 43 TN Farmer NC NC
Sarah M. HICKS Wife M Female W 23 TX House Keeping --- ---
Alexander N. HICKS Son S Male W 13 TX Farm Hand TN IL
Larkin M. HICKS Son S Male W 10 TX Works On Farm TN IL
Nancy M. HICKS Dau S Female W 7 TX At Home TN IL

Now, could this be your Henry? Notice Sarah who is probably the mother of these young adult Hicks boys, was born in NC.

1860 census Grayson Co, TX, dwelling 555, family 567:

Hicks, Sarah, 60, b NC - land 320/personal 35
" Thos., 27, b NC, no land/personal 75
" Jesse R., 25, b NC land 400/300
" Jacob M., 30, b TN no land/200

Same dwelling, family # 568:

Hicks, Henry, 23, b TN - land 400/300
" Nancy M., 20, b MO
" Thos., 2, b TX
" Sarah E., 2/12, b TX

There are other young adult male Hicks on this same page and look like the same family. Since these young adults show land and/or personal values, I would take a guess their father died and left things to them. You might search land and probate records in Grayson Co, TX.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
