African American cemeteries

I am researching the history of African American cemeteries in Brazos County. I have varying amounts of information on over 30 cemeteries in Brazos County.

There are some cemeteries which I cannot locate, including, for example, Castle Heights Cemetery, Christian Valley Cemetery, Stearnes Chapel Cemetery and Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

I also have references to graveyards which may be known by another name, such as Cedar Creek Cemetery.

In addition to my research into cemeteries, I am also trying to document funeral customs and burial practices.

I am a board member of the local African American museum and have been able to get some help from local residents, but as you would expect, I have far more questions than answers.

My research suggests that in many rural cemeteries as many as 80% or 90% of the graves may not be marked. My belief is that over the years there have been many small cemeteries whose existence is now forgotten, except perhaps by descendants of the people buried there.

As far as is known, only 3 or 4 marked graves for African Americans survive in Brazos County dated earlier than 1880. So, clearly many burial sites have been lost to time.

I will gladly share what whatever information I have and would appreciate any information people can provide. Copies of my research will be made available to the public at several locations, including the local African American Museum and the Carnegie History Center.

Thanks,
