Bowie Co Deputy Sheriff Joel Freeman Bryan, d. 24 Aug 1922

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 24 Aug 1922 Bowie County deputy sheriff J.F. BRYAN was shot and killed while standing in the driveway of his home at 10th & Pine in Texarkana. Before he died BRYAN said a black man took his gun and shot him. He was born on 26 June 1858 and was survived by his wife and 8 children. He is buried in the New Boston Cemetery. I am searching for surviving family members and any info on this incident and whether anyone was ever charged or convicted. Prior to this incident on 11 Feb 1922 Deputy W.T. JORDAN alleged a black prisoner was taken from him by four masked men and shot to death. JORDAN was indicted, tried and acquitted in the death. These incidents may be related.
