On Saturday, July 1, 2000, four descendants of Peyton Groves Parker gathered at his gravesite at Old Lebanon Cemetery in Hill County, to honor his memory, and commemorate his service in the Confederate States Army, by placing a Confederate Marker on his grave.
Peyton Groves Parker was born on January 19, 1840. By 1858, he had married Nancy A. Curtis Hobbs in Leake Co., Mississippi. He joined the CSA, Company B, of the 40th Mississippi Infantry, serving under J. R. Childress, on April 19, 1862. He fought at the Battle of Vicksburg, and was captured as a prisoner of war on July 4, 1863. He, along with the other captured Confederate Soldiers, signed an oath promising not to take up arms against the United States of America; however, he continued to serve in the CSA, and was honorably discharged on May 3, 1865, at the end of the war.
Shortly after 1865, Peyton and Nancy, and their four children, Mary E. Parker, Columbus Campbell Parker, Martha M. Parker, and James Griffin Parker, traveled to Texas, by ox-drawn covered wagon, settling in Hill Co. Two more children were born in Texas: Emily Parker and Laura Amanda Parker. Emily died as an infant in 1867, and his wife, Nancy, died in 1870. They are both buried alongside Peyton in Old Lebanon Cemetery. Peyton married again in 1871, to Eveline Jane Askew, and they settled in Johnson Co., Texas, and raised nine more children.
Peyton died September 26, 1919 in Whitney, Hill Co., Texas.
His descendants that placed the marker on his grave were:
Betty Jo Alexander Wingo, daughter of Elword Lafayette Alexander and Bessie Coleman. Bessie was the daughter of Benjamin Edward Coleman and Martha Permelia Wade. Benjamin was the son of Laura Amanda Parker and Franklin Webster Coleman. Laura was the youngest child of Peyton Groves Parker and Nancy A. Curtis Hobbs. She was born in 1869 in Aquilla, Hill Co., Texas, and died on May 23, 1945 in Hillsboro, Hill Co., Texas. Betty lives in Crowley, Texas.
Margaret Ann Coleman Allen, daughter of Edward Franklin Coleman and Loreta Braziel. Edward was the son of Benjamin Edward Coleman and Martha Permelia Wade. Margaret lives in Houston, Texas.
Barbara Dale Craddock Pike and Carolynn Virgina Craddock Sparks, daughters of Thomas Parker Craddock, Sr. and Geraldine Medrith Baskin. Thomas was the son of Thomas Buckner Craddock and Cora Dale Parker. Cora was the daughter of Columbus Campbell Parker and Ella Wood. Columbus Campbell was the son of Peyton Groves Parker and Nancy A. Curtis Hobbs. Columbus was born on July 1, 1861 in Leake Co., Mississippi, and died on May 28, 1904 in Steiner, Bosque Co., Texas. Barbara lives in Manvel, Texas, and Carolynn lives in La Porte, Texas
We would like to mention the wonderful work being done by the Old Lebanon Cemetery Association. While we were there, Mr. Roy Bessire and a crew were busy leveling headstones, clearing brush, repairing fences, and generally maintaining this small rural cemetery in a lovely manner. This is a community effort, and they are trying to raise funds to erect a new fence around the four acres of the cemetery. Roy Bessire is the President: 104 Boleman Drive, Hewitt, TX 76643-3801, telephone number 254-666-3283, e-mail: email@example.com. The Treasurer is Betty Jo Veteto, Box 297 Valley Mills, TX 76689, telephone number 254-932-6263. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
There is much that we do not know about Peyton Groves Parker. We do not know who his parents or siblings were, or where he was born. Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana have all been given as his birthplace on the various documents that we have. His middle name may have actually been Graves, and the spelling of his first name may have been Payton. We know very little about the children he had with his second wife in Johnson Co., Texas. In fact, out of all the children that we have found listed for Peyton, we are only in contact with the descendants of Laura Amanda, and Columbus Campbell. We would dearly love to find more of our cousins.
