Hoping someone can help me solve these Riddles' mysteries: 1. Riddles brothers Harvey/Harva b. 1818-1824, James A.b.1826 & Joab b. 1813 and all 3 born in Illinois moved from Carroll Co.,Arkansas after the 1860 census was taken but I am unable to locate any of them on the 1870 Texas census. Where could they be or why are they not on the census?
2. Could Harvey have been married twice? First to Polly [Mary] Smith and second to a Nancy Unknown with both women dying leaving Harvey with young children?
3. Could Harvey Riddles possibly be the father of Martha Leona Riddles b. Nov.1870, Caldwell Co.? Martha married abt.1888 James Henry Roach and they later moved to Utah, one of their children was named Harvey Edward Roach.
4. What could be the reason for Harvey's three surviving children, Thomas Edward, Alcenia and Sarah Ann apparently not knowing their mother's name; hence it was not commonly known to other family members who were informants on each of their death certificates?
Could the following explain the situation or ring a bell with anyone's family history in Bastrop/Caldwell Counties?
Harvey Riddles b.[1818-1824] ILL m. Mary Polly Smith b.1831 Mo & had Thomas E. & Mary J Riddles.Mary Polly Smith died sometime after 1860. Harvey then m. Nancy unknown and were parents of Alcena,Sarah Ann, & Martha Leona Riddles.
Nancy died, maybe in child-birth with Martha, & Harvey got sick & his sister-in-law,Lucinda Smith Riddles[m. James A. Riddles b.1826,ILL] took him in with Sarah to take care of him.Harvey & Sarah Ann lives w/Lucinda on 1880 Caldwell Census[Riddels & Riddells].The other kids found somewhere to stay. Thomas Edward[my granfather]would have been old enough to be on his own.
Martha Leona was taken in by Richard [s/o James A. & Lucinda Smith Riddles] & Beatrice Falwell Riddles][Martha listed as cousin on [Riddel]1880 Bastrop Co.census]
Nancy Unk Riddles died when the kids were little, so they never knew her. They were raised by relatives. Harvey was working so no one talked about their mother. Maybe they did not even know their father wery well. They are all living close to each other, with other people.
Also, the Pettys married into the Roach family. (Martha m. James Henry Roach) (Sarah & Alcena m. Petty)Harvey seems the most likely to be father of Martha Leona. In 1870 Harvey was on the road working & Nancy was with her relatives/parents fixing to have a baby.
Sure hope someone can help solve this. Or offer suggestions. Thank-you!
Best Regards, Willie Gail Riddles-Rotzoll
