John Nelson Garner is not my direct line, so I'm not doing a thorough Garner study. However, I have found his father: Alfred or Alford on the 1870 & 1880 Angelina Co TX census. From that I'm able to carry the line back. World Connect has various versions (as usual).

My mother did not know that her own grandmother had married this fellow, John Nelson G. I believe the marriage lasted only a few months, yet she apparently never bothered to get a formal divorce. On her death certificate, some 10 years later, she was named as Mrs Garner.
