A Tweedie/Tweedy Tartan?

As you are no doubt aware, the Tweedies are a Lowland family and a sept of Clan Fraser. Lowlanders, traditionally, do not wear the Highland kilt but tend to wear trews. I understand that Tweedies can wear the Fraser tartan as listed at the web site of Lady Saltoun, Chief of the Name Fraser - http://www.fraserchief.co.uk/tartans.html.

It is also quite possible for there to be a specific tartan for the Tweedie/Tweedy family, although none currently exists. There are two ways of obtaining a tartan, one quite expensive and one not so. The first option is to have a new tartan designed, woven and registered. To register a new tartan the Scottish Tartan Authority (http://www.tartansauthority.com/) require a sample of at least 10 inches by 7 inches. However, just getting a small sample woven is probably more difficult than ordering eight or so yards, enough for a kilt, and bit more for the sample. Depending on the weaver/company this is most likely in excess of £500. The second option is to “adopt” an existing “unidentified” tartan. There are a number of tartan samples that were not used and whose details & samples are already held by the Scottish Tartan Authority. The cost of adoption is £75 for non-members of the Authority or £50 for members. Whilst there is no physical piece of tartan to wear, there is always the option to have the registered Tweedie/Tweedy tartan woven at a later date.

Whilst I am not surnamed Tweedie or Tweedy I am willing to assist/contribute towards a Tweedie/Tweedy tartan if others are interested in option 2. If anyone is interested, please contact me at tartanATtweedy.org.uk (replacing “AT” with @).

Yours aye

Stephen
