In answer to your question of whether James Hunter Randolph was in fact a Fitz Randolph, the answer is yes, and no.James Hunter Randolph was a son of Isaac Randolph and Eleanor Hunter.Isaac Randolph was the son of James FitzRandolph and Deliverance Coward of Monmouth County, New Jersey. But James FitzRandolph dropped the prefix of his surname, and signed his will as James Randolph. He died in New York City in 1781.
My interest in the family is because of James Hunter Randolph's sister, Rebecca Longstreet Randolph, who became the wife of the Rev. Dr. Isaac Stockton Keith Axson.Rebecca and I.S.K. Axson were the grandparents of Ellen Louise Axson, first wife of President Woodrow Wilson. My research focus is on the genealogy of President Wilson and both of his wives, Ellen Axson and Edith Bolling.
