Regarding your Dad and his book, a Tutt research friend of mine contacted him by letter dated February 2, 1984. He wrote a nice response to her dated February 7, 1984, and enclosed a copy of his book for her. She shared the book with me along with a copy of the February 7 letter.
A big problem, which you undoubtedly have encountered in researching the Tutts is the multiple use of the names James, Richard and Benjamin within and across generations. It is a gross understatement to say that it creates research challenges.
In my opinion, the lineage in your Dad’s book is correct. However, I have not directly researched this line myself. As a result, my information comes primarily from the research of others, but they are consistent. Also, the will of Captain James Tutt (brother to Lt. Charles Tutt) shows that he (James) did have a son named Benjamin, but he probably was born in the 1780s and I don’t know whether he ever married. At any rate, he likely would have been too young to be the Benjamin in your direct line.
Maybe you can answer a question for me. At this link (http://www.newfalconherald.com/DisplayArticle.php?ArticleID=6004) is an article about Charles Leaming Tutt that includes the following statement, “…Born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1864, the Tutt family's roots stretch back to England, where one ancestor was once mayor of London and another was a member of Gen. George Washington's staff during the Revolutionary War….” Curiously, the link dates the article at October 2011. When I first saw the article, it was dated April 2010. Don’t know what to make of that. It is in an online publication called, “The New Falcon Herald”.
I made one attempt to contact the author to try and get more information or a lead on the reported London Mayor ancestor, but got no response. Do you have any such information? Maybe if you tried to contact the author you might have more luck than I did. The bottom line is that it would be a real coup to clearly identify and document the parents of our “immigrant”, Richard Tutt (m. Mary Underwood).
