Johnson "might" have been Johnsson in Sweden but it is far more likely it was Jonasson (Jonasdotter), Johansson (Johansdotter), Jonsson (Jonsdotter), Jönsson (Jönsdotter), Johannesson (Johannesdotter), etc. All those spellings (and more) were Americanized to Johnson. (Female forms of those names are in the parentheses.)
