John Turnley, Father of George was born in Botetout County, VA in 1730. He married Mary Handy. They moved to Jefferson County TN about 1786. Since George was only 14 yres old when he fought in the Revolutionary war I believe John was with him at Kings Mtn. I can find George listed in many books as fighting at Kings Mtn. John also fought in the French & Indian War in 1753. He owned land, about 600 acres when he sold it to go to TN. Apparently he was granted about 50-60 acres for his service in the F&I war. I have been trying to track the Turnley who came to America which apparently would be John's father who is another John, but have been unable to find definite verification. The father was born about 1690-92 and died when John of Boutetout was about 8 years old.
