Johan Peter Thuny born 1710/11 near Berne....arrived U.S. 1741, by 1749 in Valley of VA - his children populated the south and also KY, IL, IN, MO, OK and west from there - so there are a lot of his descendants - not counting his two brothers who settled in PA and moved west from there.
The CT Turneys were English speaking and arrived about a good 100 years before the German speaking Turneys. The reason I suggested you might look at this group is your names plus the fact that a branch of them moved to Canada. You might try Mary Turney in Texas - she has done a lot of research on the CT Turneys.
Last night I looked at another large group of Turneys who were in MO and descend from Peter Turney, then moved eventually to South Dakota with some to Iowa. I think where they went was called Turney Township for a while in SD.
Of course, after about 2 generations, the family no longer spoke German so by the Rev War they were English speaking.
