Elizabeth Margaret ANDERSON married John TURNBULL 1938 Croydon.

I am trying to track down any descendents of Elizabeth Anderson and her husband John Brandram Turnbull who were married on 10 June 1938 at the Parish Church of Shirley, Croydon, Surrey.

John Turnbull was a bachelor aged 29, Builder, residing at 1 Hook Hill, Sanderstead, son of Arthur William Turnbull, Builder.

Elizabeth Margaret Anderson was living at 15 Chepstow Road, Croydon, with her father and mother, Andrew Anderson, formerly a Civil Engineer, and Elizabeth Anderson, nee Hendry.

Elizabeth Margaret Anderson was born 5 January 1907 in West Looe, Liskeard, Cornwall. The certificate lists the father (the informant) as Andrew Anderson, Engineer and Iron Merchant's Assistant, and the mother was Elizabeth Hendry. I believe Elizabeth Margaret Turnbull died Jan 1995 in Croydon.

Elizabeth's mother Elizabeth Hendry was my great aunt and the information I had from my father (now deceased) was -

She married a Mr Anderson in India and that she had two daughters Elizabeth and Agnes. The family returned to the UK and Croydon for their retirement. The daughter Elizabeth married a Mr Turnbull who may have had some connection withe the MCC!

I have been unable to find any record of the marriage of Elizabeth Hendry and Andrew Anderson anywhere in the UK, nor can I find them in the 1901 or 1911 censuses, so maybe the India bit is accurate and they only came home briefly in 1906\7 for the birth of Elizabeth Margaret. Tried Passenger lists but no joy!

It would seem they did retire to Croydon as Andrew was one of the witnesses at his daughters wedding. The local studies library have kindly found them in electoral roles -
1938 - ANDERSON, Andrew, ANDERSON, Elizabeth, ANDERSON, Elizabeth Margaret, SMITH, May, STONE, Alice
1939 - ANDERSON, Andrew, ANDERSON, Elizabeth, SMITH, May, STONE, Alice
1945 - ANDERSON, Andrew, ANDERSON, Elizabeth, SMITH, Alice M., STONE, Alice M.

I would love to know a bit more about Elizabeth and her husband John Turnbull. Did Elizabeth and John have any children? Are there any descendents living in Croydon? Did John have any connection with the MCC? Also have a load of detail on the Hendry ancestry which I would love to pass on to any of their descendants.

Equally I hope that any descendants may be able to provide a bit more detail on Elizabeth's parents Andrew Anderson and Elizabeth Hendry and their life and possible other children.

Hope somebody out there recognises these name and can help me fill in the gaps.

All the best

John Hendry
