Thank you for your reply to my message Temel. My family lived in the Greek quarters Pera in Constantinople as it was known then. I understand Pera and Galata are the same place. My great Aunt said she was born in Pera. My grandmother also appears to have been born there of Greek parents.

My grandfather Paul Mavridis was a musician along with his father Nicholas and his brother-in-law Vladimir Raniets.

My grandfather was born in Austria of an Austrian mother and it seems his father Nicholas was either German or Austrian and they arrived in Constantinople when Paul was 7 years of age.
I don`t know which churches my family would have used for marriage or otherwise.

It is possible that Paul Mavridis changed his name from Schwartz to Mavridis which both mean black but this is uncertain and it may be that the name was changed when they went to Greece after 1918. I wondered if there would be a census around 1890 or 1900 in Pera. What I am really trying to find out is which part of Austria they were from.
