Yes Tom,
Before the invasion of Golden Army, Tatars of present day Tataristan were called Volga Bulgars. They were Turkic Group who were settled in that region for a long time. Before they adapted Islam Religion about 1000 years ago they were freely mixing up with Russians. Today you could see many Russians with Turkic sounding last names. Of course it also holds true the other way around.
Volga Bulgars who converted to Christianity at that time are now known as Chuvash. The ones who accepted Judaism became Khazars.
Volga Bulgars who immigrated to Balkans, mixed with Slavs and become today's Danube Bulgars. By the way "Bulgar" in Tatar language means "Rebel". Tatars also settled in Poland and in many Balkan Nations.
