Another possibility is that my grandfather's ancestor came into the Balkan region as a soldier of Russian/Serbian armies for one the multiple wars they fought in the Balkans.

And there is a saying "Scratch a Russian and you'll find a Tatar inside" due to the extent that Tatar's mixed their blood with the Russians, mostly by force.
