TURK of Bad Axe, Michigan
Perhaps you can help me solve a mystery.
My Great-grandmother Rena (MARTIN) OLIPHANT, was born 16 SEP 1872, in Bad Axe, Michigan.
Rena's surname at bith was TURK. Supposedly, her mother died, and Rena was adopted by her uncle, Chaldea MARTIN and her surname was changed to MARTIN.
Rena's birth mother was probably born in Canada, as were most or all of her mother's sibblings (Chaldea MARTIN was born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada). Most of the MARTIN family settled in Niagara County, N.Y., where my OLIPHANT ancestors lived.
Rena married five times, so her married surnames include: STOVER, SMITH, WEBSTER, MOORE & OLIPHANT.
Rena died 2 FEB 1956, supposedly in Toledo, Ohio.
Most of this information is from family members and not everyone agrees with various parts of the story.
Does anyone have any references about a Rena TURK of Bad Axe (or other TURKs of Bad Axe)?
Oddly enough, Amanda OLIPHANT, a half-sister of R.E. Lee OLIPHANT (Rena's husband) married a man named Ira ARNOT, a son of Robert J. ARNOT of Deckerville and/or Lexington, Michigan.
The 1870 CENSUS for Lexington, Sanilac County, Michigan, shows a Jane TURK living with the family of Robert J. ARNOT.
Confusing, isn't it?
Thank you for any clues you can provide.
