Ann (b. ca. 1715, Talbot, MD), daughter of Foster and married John Goldsborough
It has widely been accepted among descendants of Benjamin Lemasters, Revolutionary War Veteran of Maryland and (now West) Virginia that his wife, Rebecca Martin, was the daughter of a couple from Talbot County, Maryland named John and Elizabeth (Goldsborough) Martin. Over the years I have seen numerous attempts to attach Elizabeth Goldsborough somewhere on the confusing Goldsborough Family Tree. Set forth below is my current THEORY. I cannot stress enough that it is a working theory, which currently explains the data available but which needs more evidence to reach the level of proof.
THEORY:Elizabeth Goldsborough was born January 22, 1735 to John and Ann (Turbutt) Goldsborough in St. Peter’s Parish in the area of Talbot and/or Dorchester County, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (the Chesapeake Bay). Her parents had been married just about a year before (early 1734 or late 1733) and Elizabeth was their first child. Elizabeth’s father, John, had been born about 1711 and her mother, Ann, had been born about 1715.
Her paternal grandparents were Robert and Elizabeth (Greenbury) Goldsborough and Elizabeth was likely named for this grandmother. Her maternal grandparents were Foster and Bridget (Stone) Turbutt. Her grandfather Robert Goldsborough was the son of Nicholas and Margaret (Howes) Goldsborough, immigrants from England. Her grandmother Elizabeth was the daughter of Nicholas and Anne (Dorsey?) Greenbury, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland (just across the Bay from Talbot), and also from England. Her grandfather Foster was the son of Michael and Sarah (Foster) Turbutt, also from England. Her grandmother Bridget was the daughter of an as-yet undiscovered couple.
Over the years, Elizabeth had younger siblings as follows: Robert (b. February 1, 1736); John (b. March 26, 1740); Greenbury (b.April 22, 1742 and named for the family of his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Greenbury) Goldsborough); Charles (b. June 16, 1744); Anne (b. January 2, 1751); Henrietta Maria (b. December 6, 1752); Mary (b. October or December 19, 1755); and William (b. June 2, 1759).
Elizabeth had many relatives on the Eastern Shore, including many who were also named Elizabeth Goldsborough. There was her first cousin once removed (first cousin of her father). That Elizabeth had been born about 1704 to Robert and Elizabeth (Sergeant) Goldsborough and had married Thomas Martin in 1734, the year before our Elizabeth was born. Then there was her older first cousin Elizabeth, born in 1731 to Uncle Charles and his first wife, Elizabeth (Ennalls) Goldsborough (and who would later marry her cousin, William Ennalls). When Elizabeth was about 8 (circa 1743), her first cousin Elizabeth was born to Uncle William and his first wife, Elizabeth (Robins) Goldsborough, but that Elizabeth died (before 1750, the date of Uncle William’s will). That same year, 1743, another first cousin Elizabeth was born to Aunt Sarah (Turbutt) Goldsborough and her husband Nicholas, who was also our Elizabeth’s first cousin once removed (being her father John’s first cousin). {This cousin Elizabeth was still single in 1771, at the age of about 28, when her mother, Sarah (Turbutt) Goldsborough wrote her will.}Two years later, in 1745, a double cousin Elizabeth was born to Uncle Robert Goldsborough (her father John’s older brother) and his wife, Mary Ann (Turbutt) Goldsborough, the older sister of Ann (Turbutt) Goldsborough, our Elizabeth’s mother. This Elizabeth died at the age of 3, in 1748 (according to the LDS, presumably extracted from the records of St. Peters).
In about 1756, Elizabeth was courted by young John Martin, a relative of Thomas Martin, the husband of Elizabeth (Goldsborough) Martin, our Elizabeth’s older first cousin once removed. They were married circa 1756. In 1758, they had a daughter and named her Rebecca. Rebecca may have had siblings, but they remain to be found.
