"Double Deaths in a Los Angeles Household - Mr. and Mrs S. R. Tupper die with few hours of each other - Former Truro residents - Sad indeed are the dispatches from the Tupper household in Los Angeles, California, informing relatives and other friends in Truro of the death of Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Tupper in that city, and the terrible shock to the children of the father and mother. both passing away within 12 hours of each other.
Mr. Tupper, who had been suffering from a form of paralysis for some years, died on Tuesday evening the 13th inst. at six o'clock, and his wife, who had not been in good health of late, at five o'clock on the following morning, the 14th, also past over the "great divide" and joined her husband in the home beyond. Her demise, in her poor state of health, likely occasioned by the shock of her husbands death, "In death not divided" may indeed, be said of these former highly respected citizens of the town of Truro.
Mr. and Mrs. Tupper came to Truro from King's county many years ago and during their long sojourn in Truro were among our very best citizens. Mr. Tupper held many positions of prominence in Truro and for many years was the efficient Clerk and Treasurer of this town. He was later a partner in the old firm of the Truro Foundry and Machine Company and was in every respect a first class citizen. Some seven years ago, his health failing, he removed to the warmer climate of California and settled with his family in Los Angeles. From this city he has occasionally sent kindly greetings, thru the Truro News, to his friends here and we all hoped to learn of his improvement in health; - but instead now the painful shock comes of this double death in our friend's home in far-off California.
There survives in the immediate family, all in Los Angeles, we believe Miss Lou Tupper; Mrs. George Stone, Mrs. George Leeman, Mrs. Frank Poor and Conductor Charles Tupper; Fred in Calgary, Frank in New York City; Nathan in Chicago and Mrs. Howell in Boston.
To these bereaved ones, in this doubly sorrow-stricken family, and to other sorrowing relatives we extend our sincere sympathy". - (Truro Daily News - February 15, 1912)
"In mentioning the names of the children of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. Tupper we omitted the name of Mrs. Jost, (Nellie Tupper) wife of Rev. Roland S. Jost, Arcadia, Yarmouth Co., N.S." - (Truro Daily News February 16, 1912)
Spouse: Martha Elizabeth Borden, F
Birth: 26 Apr 1841
Death: 14 Feb 1912, Los Angeles, California, USA, age: 70
Burial: 15 Feb 1912, age: 70
Father: John Wells Borden, M (1806-)
Mother: Sarah Melvina Pineo, F (1809-1881)
At Rest in Sunny California - THE FUNERAL OF MR. AND MRS. S. R. TUPPER - The funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Silas R. Tupper took place Thursday, February 15 at 2 p.m., from the Boyle Heights, M.E. church, Los Angeles, California. Mr. Tupper passed away Tuesday at 6 p.m., and Mrs. Tupper followed him Wednesday at 5 a.m. It was an unusual co-incident that Mrs. Tupper's parents, died within twelve hours of each other.
A number of old Truro friends now residents of Los Angeles, attended the services.
The caskets were laden with beautiful floral offerings from old and new friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Tupper had been married over fifty-three years, and it seems that after such a long sojourn together in life that they were not separated in death.
A member of this grief--stricken family in a short note to the News says: "Mother was ill eight days. She suffered terribly, altho everything that love, skill and science could do for her was done. Father seemed unusually well and strong the day before Mother was sick, and as soon as he realized her condition he seemed to collapse, gradually losing control of his organs, and he just slept away. He was in bed seven days. We could not wish him to live in his helpless condition, but we did hope to keep mother a least a few years longer. Now we realize it was best for her to go with father, as neither would have been happy on earth without the other. It was selfishness on our part to want to keep her with us." - (Truro Daily News February 29, 1912)
