Kyle, I have no information at all as to whether or not your family came into North Carolina from Virginia, but that would certainly seem possible, if not even probable. I do have information on some of the early Tunstall families in Virginia, and their ancestry. If I had to make a guess, it would be that your family probably came from that same bunch, although I certainly could not prove it or state the exact line of descent.
The early Virginia Tunstalls - and I suspect all others of the same name! - descended from the early Tunstalls whose seat in England was at Thurland Castle, which still stands near the village of Cantsfield in Lancashire. And their ancestry goes back to King Edward I of England, an early Plantagenet king. And the Plantagenets claimed descent from the Roman Emperor Claudius, who was Emperor of Rome at the time of the birth of Christ.
Now, if you are interested in the history of that Virginia family and their ancestry, I would suggest that you locate a copy of a little book I published in 1997, entitled "Our Royal And Noble Ancestry." That book is no longer available for purchase, but copies have been placed in a number of genealogical libraries around the country, including the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, where it has also been filmed, making it available at any Mormon Church Family History Center via their film loan program, at minimal cost.
Good luck with your further research, and I hope this may help some.
