I have an ancestor, Johannah Tungate, born 05 Jun 1851 KY, died 07 Aug 1925 Beaver Falls, Beaver County, PA. Her marriage record states that she was of Covington, Kentucky, which is in Kenton County. I have found her in the 1850 & 1860 Covington, Kenton County, KY census records with Samuel and/or Mary Tungate.
Samuel was born circa 1801 in KY and Mary was born circa 1816 KY. Samuel died before 1860 probably in Covington. I found Mary in no census after 1860. This same Samuel is in the 1840 Grant County, KY census with Eph. (Ephraim), Gipson (Gibson), and Wm. Tongate/Tunget. I also found that Dixon, Ephraim, Samuel, & Urial Tungate were on Tax Lists in Grant County between 1820 to 1829. I found everyone but Samuel in the 1830 Grant County, KY census.
According to a reference to a marriage record I found for a Samuel Tongate, he married Peggy Marksberry on 19 Jul 1824. At first I thought this might be my Samuel Tungate but in the 1850 census his wife is listed as Aara age 34 born in KY and in 1860 his wife is Mary age 44 born in KY. I'm thinking the wives are in fact the same person using different names. The children listed were as follows: In 1850, John 14 KY; James 11 KY; Samuel 8 KY; Pernelia 7 KY; Mary 5 KY; Joannah 2 KY. In 1860 Samuel must be deceased but the children match those that were in 1850. In 1860, James 22 KY, Tobacconist; Samuel 18 KY, Tobacconist; Permelia 15 KY; Mary 13 KY; Joanna 10 KY; Augusta 8 KY; Henry 6 KY.
As you can see Samuel's sons were Tobacconist. Samuel's occupation is also listed as Tobacconist in 1850. The 3 oldest boys, John, James, & Samuel all enlisted during the Civil War in Company E, 41st Enrolled Militia Regiment Kentucky on 04 September 1862 and they all mustered out together in Washington, DC on 04 October 1862.
My question to those of you who have extensively researched this Tungate family. Could the Samuel you list as the son of Ephraim Tungate and Nancy Marksberry with the dates (~1801/1854-1860) be the same Samuel I am trying to find more on? I have my Samuel Tongate as (c1801-bef. 1860). Also, if it is the same Samuel Tungate, could Aara or Mary be Peggy Marksberry or is she possibly a 2nd wife?
Any help would appreciated in unraveling this Tungate family.
