During the thirty years I have researched the Tullis/Tullos family, I have found the surname spelled various ways. Many times the same family's name has been spelled Tullis, Tillis, Tullos, Tulloss, etc. The spellings I chose for the previous posting (#231) were those found in the US Census records. My experience tells me that spelling, especially for surnames, was mutable prior to 1900. Most Census takers would spell a surname, or given name, as they heard it. A German from Ohio, taking the census in Texas, listening to a Georgian might hear and then spell Tulloss as Tillis. I do not consider these misspellings or changes in spelling, simply variations of how to spell the name. Ultimately, both Tullis and Tulloss stem from the same Celtic root word meaning hill. Thus, we seem to be researching the "Hill" family.
