Sylva/Sylvia C. Tuller/Tullar, Berkshire, Massachusetts
Hello Fellow Researchers of the Tullar surname. I am in hopes that I am closing in on identifying my ancestor Sylva/Sylvia Cloa Tullar/Tuller and correctly placing her with parents. Perhaps some of you will be able to provide additional clues.
Here is what I have for Sylva:
1) Ellen Thornton Hoffrichter stated, based on text contained in the Commemorative Biographical Record of the counties of Huron and Lorain, Ohio (1894), that Sylvia C. Tuller married Edward Glynn about 1816 in MA. Ellen also stated, based on the same source, that Sylvia probably died at Berkshire Co, MA. This has turned out to be incorrect.
2) Again from Ellen's compilation, Edward Glynn & Sylvia C. Tuller had three children: Henry F. Glynn, born 1 July 1817, Lorenzo D. Glynn, born 17 Oct 1819, and Alphret Jasper Glynn, born 2 July 1821.
3) Edward Glyn was enumerated in the 1820 census for Alford, Berkshire, MA. His household contained 3 males age 0-9, and these reasonably correspond to William (Freson, see #4 below), Henry F, and Lorenzo D. Also included was a female age 26-44, and that reasonably corresponds with Sylvia C. Tuller Glynn.
4) From a different source (Acts and resolves passed by the Legislature [MA]), we know that Sylvia was widowed by 1824. "Pauper Accounts. Alford, for supporting Sylvia C. Glynn, William Glynn, Henry Glynn, Lorenzo Glynn, and Justin [sic] Glynn, to January 1st, 1824. $153.70." I have an unlabeled document that contains the name William D. G. Freson and the birthdate 18 May 1812. Although evidence is needed, I suspect that the William Glynn named in the Pauper Accounts is actually William D. G. Freson and that he is the son of Sylvia and an unknown spouse named Freson or Frieson. I further suggest that it is plausible that the unknown Freson died between 1811 and 1816 and that Sylvia then married Edward Glynn, who may have adopted the young William Freson.
5) An image of the application for a marriage license can be viewed at Familysearch. On 28 June 1847, Charles B. Howk applied for a marriage license for Samuel Jones and Sylva Glenn. (Some transcribers have erroneously read "Sylva" as "Lydia." However, "Sylva" is clear and not in question.
6) Samuel and Sylvia/Sylva are enumerated in the Liverpool, Medina, Ohio census of 1850 and the Pittsfield, Lorain, OH, censuses of 1860 and 1870. The ages given for Sylva/Sylvia in these censuses were 63, 73, and 83, providing a fairly strong evidential basis for concluding that Sylva/Sylvia was born in 1786 or 1787.
7) My unlabeled original document reports that Sylva (Tuller) Jones died 8 Sept, 1872. However, I have not been able to find official death vitals for either Sylva or Samuel.
After putting together the above info about Sylva C. Tuller, I became aware of a family in Berkshire, MA, that spelled their surname "Tullar." So far, all of the Tullars I have been looking at are descended from John L. Tullar & Ann Karner. Again, so far, I have found no reference to any female Tullar who might be named Sylva or Sylvia. On the other hand, the censuses for 1800 and 1810 imply that there were some females residing in Tullar households that are not yet identified and for whom the birth year is constrained by the age ranges to be within a few years of 1787.
It seems, then, that it is possible to fit Sylva C. Tuller into any of 3 Tullar families: John Tullar & Mary Starks, Seneca Tullar & Eunice Wells/Welles, or Joel Tullar & Mercy Loomis. Connecting Sylva to David Tullar, Martin Tullar, or Paul Tullar would not be supported by various aspects of the existing evidence (although the existing evidence may be incorrect).
So, I guess to put the question to the Tullar research community, is there any evidence out there that would stand for or against linking Sylva C. Tuller, spouse of Edward Glynn and Samuel Jones, to one of the Tullar families of Egremont or Sheffield or Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA?
Best regards to everyone,
