Gloria:

May I respectfully ask that you re-check the dates on your sugar container? James Walker Tufts was born 11 Feb 1835, Charlestown, MA,and died 3 Feb 1902, Pinehurst, NC. I just had a look at one of James' items I have and there is actually no date on it. Each one of his pieces was numbered and perhaps the 1806 is the number on the item you have - my item # is 1042 and appears under the words "Warrented and Quadruple plated". The silverware factory was actually founded in 1875 and ended in 1915.

James actually made his fortune as the manufacturer of a soda fountain and, because of ill health (asthma) he moved his family to North Carolina and founded Pinehurst - today renowned as the birthplace of golf in North America.

There are usually two - three dozen James Walker Tufts' silverplated items up for bid on Ebay on any given day.
