Jean, In the handwritten "Tucker Family History" compiled by Gertrude Tucker Fitzpatrick in 1917, and sent to me by William Newman of Mich. in 1996. (15 pages long)
"Jonas born 1807 died 1870. In 1839 he moved to Fayette Co. Ill.with wife and children Elizabeth, Barnett, William & John. Three ch were born in the West. Wilson, Mary Francis and James. The wife died 1844. In 1845 he returned to Ohio taking with him, Barnett, John, William and Wilson.
John was left with his UNCLE TOM who lived near JIMTOWN in HOLMES Co. OHIO for THREE YEARS (til 1848). He was small of stature and very active. His uncle used him as a jockey riding race horses. Not liking that trade he went to live with his grandfather, John Welker near Milwood Ohio until 1855 helping on the farm. About this time there was a great migration to the West. John joined the throng of emigrants. he accompanied his uncle Obadiah who was going west in wagons as far as Keokuk Iowa. Here he left the crowd and started up the river with a steamboat ticket and a fiddle. He landed at Port Louisa near Burlington. From here he walked across country to Wapello, co seat of Louisa Co." (he later returned to Millwood, Ohio. I wonder if Thomas started out with the group and died along the way?
