Richard TUCKER 1594 Portland Me. & N.H.
Randy,
Richard TUCKER was born in Stogumber, Somerset Co. England & was baptized in St. Mary's Church there 22 Jan 1594. (Ephriam Tucker Book) Wells History of Portland Me- He arrived on ship "Mary & John". He came to America 1630 & was a partner of George Cleeves and an agent of Sir Ferdinando Gorges. They first settled in what is now Cape Elizabeth, but found it was held under another patent & were forced to leave. They became the founders of Portland Me. in 1634. It was first called Machigonne by the Indian, then Casco, then Falmouth & now Portland.
About 1653 he removed to Portsmouth, N.H. where he died in 1679, his wife Margaret survived him several years. Willis manuscript of Portland, now in the Public Libray of Portland, Me. was a statement that his wife was a daughter of George CLEEVES. She was probably a first wife, as I read in a library in Oak Harbor, Ohio that Richard & Margaret had no children. (Posts on this forum say that the dau Seaborn was adopted by Richard & she was a dau of Richards wife Margaret). I can't locate the marriage records but I noted a marriage in 1646 & 23 May 1661, I need to check that.
